The first feature mentioned above is generally used for wide area synchronization. We need to do things with a second signal synchronization. In practice, the feature of 1-second interval between PPSs is the most widely used
Not all GPS modules have the PPS function Different GPS modules have different application scenarios for positioning when they are designed. Generally, they are divided into three categories: ordinary cheap modules, such as the positioning in our common mobile phones and the GPS modules for a few yuan; There is a special focus on centimeter level precision positioning, such as the positioning used by UAV teams; There are applications that focus on time. Here we use strict PPS requirements as an example
More specifically, the time interval between the two adjacent rising edges of the PPS is exactly 1 second. This standard 1 second can be used to adjust the output frequency of the frequency controlled oscillator The specific implementation is to use the number of pulses of the technical oscillator between the rising edges of the two PPS. If the actual count is higher than the theoretical frequency value, it needs to be fed back to the controllable oscillator in some way to lower the input frequency; If the actual count is lower than the theoretical frequency value, it needs to be fed back to the controlled oscillator in some way, and the input frequency is too high The oscillator with voltage control regulation is usually used here, and the feedback device mainly realizes voltage regulation through high-precision DAC If the above process is marked with a letter, it is the D in GPSDO. By using PPS to tame the clock, we can count and reset the PPS once a second, which ensures the highest accuracy and ensures an error of one count (i.e., 1HZ) within one second. When multiple PPS can count once, such as counting and resetting the PPS once every 10 seconds, the highest accuracy can guarantee an error of one count (i.e., 0.1 HZ) within 10 seconds Therefore, we need to conduct acquisition every n seconds, and then adjust and tame the oscillator according to the acquisition results, which can be called a regulation cycle
From a macro perspective, we believe that the crystal frequency can be tamed to an ideal value by dynamic adjustment of the crystal oscillator for multiple periods On the micro level, the frequency offset generated by the crystal oscillator in each adjustment period depends on the performance of the crystal oscillator itself. We often use a constant temperature crystal oscillator or a temperature compensated crystal oscillator to minimize the frequency offset in an adjustment period
